MUA NOTES w/JMarie: Makeup Expiration Date @kisss_n_makeup

Are you a makeup junkie? Or maybe you’re a minimalist who rarely wears makeup but has it on hand for special occasions. Wherever you fit in the cosmetics lovers chain, you need to know that makeup, even left unopened, goes bad. Didn’t know that there’s such a thing as a Makeup Expiration Date? Don’t worry… That’s what I’m here for!

If a product has an makeup expiration date on it, go by that but remember, that makeup expiration date is usually only for when the product is unopened. Once you open a cosmetic, the clock starts ticking. Even if you’re super careful about sealing the products, keeping your hands clean at all times when using a product, and storing your makeup in a cool, dark room (which is generally best), the stuff is going to go bad anyway.

Mascara Expiration: 4 to 6 Months

This is the one product that goes bad faster than any other cosmetic. Part of the reason is that many users pump the wand in and out of the tube, allowing air into it which than mixes with the chemicals and causes bacteria. You should toss mascara out after four months even if you only used it a handful of times.

You can probably get six months of wear from a mascara without any issues if you are careful not to pump the wand and keep the tube tightly closed after every use. Four to six months is such a short time, but better to be safe than sorry.

Foundation Expiration: 12 to 18 Months

This goes for liquid, cream, and stick foundation. If your foundation says it is oil free or the ingredients don’t have any oils in them, your best bet is to toss your foundation after about 12 months. Oil-based foundation lasts a bit longer, around 18 months. That’s not bad for a bottle of foundation and most women find that they run out before the makeup expires. Mineral powder foundation should be closed tightly after each use and stored in a cool place.

Concealer Expiration: 12 to 18 months

Most concealers hold up pretty well and are gone before they reach the makeup expiration date. However, if you notice that your concealer is drying out, becoming flaky, or has a weird scent, throw it out! You don’t want anything that’s going bad on your skin.

Blush Expiration: Powder Blush – 24 months | Cream Blush – 12 to 18 Months

You have quite some time with blush. This is another cosmetic that is usually gone before it reaches the makeup expiration date. Be careful of cream blushes though if you use your fingers to apply. Bacteria will transfer and could make the blush go bad before its time. If cream or liquid blush starts to dry out or smell funny, toss it.

Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Lip liner, Face Powder, Eye Shadow, Eye Liner Expiration: About 24 Months

All of these cosmetics hold up well over time. Keep them well sealed and away from extreme temperatures and you should get about two years use from them. The exception is cream eyeshadow which usually starts to go bad at about the 12 to 18 month mark.

P.S: Every thing you purchase should have this on the box so you know more or less how long you have before your makeup goes bad.

MUA Notes: Summer Makeup Tips w/ @Kisss_n_Makeup

1. USE a primer. You won’t regret the few seconds it will take to smooth on a primer, which goes on after moisturizer but before face makeup. Primer provides a smooth base and helps with your pores for whatever goes on next. Primers are definitely the way to go in summer they’re incredibly light — they don’t feel at all like a heavy, additional layer — and they really help hold makeup in place. Some to try are MAC’s skin base primer or Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Light.

2. Less is more. Just as you switch to breezy skirts and linen blouses, dress your face with lighter makeup. Swap foundation for tinted moisturizer. These sheer formulas look and feel airier on skin and are less likely to turn cakey on steamy days. Feeling a little too exposed? brush powder foundation over the tinted moisturizer in spots where you need a little extra coverage — say, on blemishes or areas of redness around your nose. Some to try are Hourglass tinted moisturizer (My personal favorite) and Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.

3. Bronze Beauty. Bronzer makes your eyes look brighter, your teeth whiter — everyone looks better with a little warmth added to their skin. To keep the results looking fresh and natural apply bronzer just to the high points of your face, where the sun naturally hits you: forehead, cheekbones, chin, and nose. Powder bronzers are the easiest to apply. Another essential for keeping it real: a brush with long, loose, fluffy bristles — anything densely packed will deposit too much color. Don’t forget to sweep a little bronzer onto your neck and earlobes, especially if you have short hair or are wearing a ponytail. Some to try are Nars laguna bronzer, MAC compact bronzer in refined golden.

4. Don’t be afraid to try bright colors. Just as you’re probably more likely to wear a vivid top or carry a bright bag this season, now’s the perfect time to play up your makeup palette. Besides looking summery, livelier colors brighten the face and bring a youthful glow to skin. If you tend to stick with neutrals, experiment with just one area of your face. A cute blush on the apples of the cheeks is a good place to start. Some to try are Bobbi Brown Blush in Pale Pink, MAC dollymix blush.

5. Stop shine, add glow. The T-zone instantly telegraphs the message “I’m hot” — and I don’t mean sexy lol. To eliminate shine in seconds, use blotting papers — They’re cheap and easy just press and go. If you need to perk up your makeup too, blot first, then follow-up with a dusting of pressed powder with a hint of luminescence. You want to eliminate shine, but you still want to look a little glow-y. Try Too Faced Re-Fresh Oil Blotting Papers or Clean & Clear

6. Switch out thick lipsticks. Since heavy lip colors often feel like overkill once the weather warms up, many women opt for clear balm or skip their lips altogether. But just because you’re feeling low-maintenance doesn’t mean you have to look it. A simple swipe-and-go choice: tinted lip balms. They give you whisper-light color, and many even have SPF to protect you from the sun. Try Neutrogena MoistureShine Tinted Lip Balm SPF 20 or Jane Be Pure Mineral Lip Balm

7. Stay-proof your eye makeup. For longer-lasting shadow, avoid using eye cream on your lids (it can break down makeup), and smooth on an eye primer instead. It will minimize creasing and create a base for the shadow to cling to so it lasts longer. Although powder shadows generally last longer than creams, for the ultimate in all-day wearability, layer a powder over a cream. Try MAC paint pots or Tarte Lock & Roll Eye Shadow Duo, which has matching cream and powder shadows in one tube. Doubling up works for liner, too. Apply your regular pencil or cream liner, then use a small angled brush to press dark shadow over the liner to set it for longer wear. Don’t forget to wear waterproof mascara and liner.

The ath-elite makeup trend is what the Summer is all about – Fresh, dewy skin with a pop of color.
